FRIDAY 17TH
JUNE 2005, 17:30
On behalf of
the Committee, it gives me great pleasure to invite you to our
summer meeting with your spouses/partners along with any guests
you would like to invite.
With 2005 being the
centenary of the dissolution of the union with Sweden, what
could be more topical than a visit to the bastion of Norwegian
democracy, the Norwegian parliament?
|
Mr Carl I Hagen, the
Chairman of Fremskrittspartiet has kindly invited us to visit
Stortinget where he will give us a guided tour. This tour will
thereafter be followed by a light summer meal at the Defence
Museum in Akershus Festningen.
The visit will be
held on Friday (note) 17th June 2005 starting at
17:30. Please meet in the reception at Stortinget.
|
 |
As usual, please make your reservations with David Wylie at
house@cally.org ,
by FRIDAY 10th June please, as we need to know
the final numbers for both the visit to The Parliament and for
the dinner afterwards as soon as possible.

MARCH MEETING
We
unfortunately had to cancel our February meeting as it appeared many
of our members were on winter vacation, but since we haven’t had a
Society meeting since the Burns’ Supper, we should expect a large
turn-out at our next meeting! Accordingly, on behalf of your
committee it gives me pleasure to invite you to our March meeting,
which will be held on Thursday 17th March 2005 at
18:30, at our usual location, Sjømannsforeningen.
This evening’s presentation will be given by a fellow Caledonian
Prof. David Bruton under the title of:
“Beautiful
Fossils – The Career of a Paleontologist”

David will present a travelogue of his life around the world
collecting fossils, from behind the previous Iron Curtain to other
exotic locations such as the Sahara and the Artic.
As
we have announced previously, we are extending our invitation for
this meeting to lady guests and your spouses, partners, wives,
girlfriends etc. will be very welcome to join us in what promises to
be an interesting evening.
As
usual, please make your reservations with David Wylie at
house@cally.org by MONDAY 14th
March.

FEBRUARY MEETING
Another Burns Supper has come and gone and I hope those of you who
attended enjoyed yourselves as much as I did. Those of you who were
not present missed a good evening with a different slant on the
Immortal Memory from Alf Cranner.
On
behalf of your committee it gives me pleasure to invite you to our
February meeting, which will be held on Thursday 24th
February 2005 at 18:30, at our usual location, Sjømannsforeningen.
This evening’s presentation will be given by Jarle Munch under the
title of “Oil and water – the World Seen From The North Sea”.
Jarle has been a foreign correspondent with NRK and has spent many
years in the Middle East. He has indicated that his presentation
will also touch upon his experience from that part of the world.
As
usual, please make your reservations with David Wylie at
house@cally.org, by MONDAY
21st February. Unfortunately, I will not be able to
attend but I hope you all have a very enjoyable evening.
Yours aye,

The
CALLY BURNS
NIGHT was a great success this year. Wonderful haggis, smooth
whiskies and a great atmosphere contributed to a memorable evening!
Pictures to follow!
ECKBO SELSKAPSLOKALER 28TH JANUARY
2005, 18:30 FOR 19:00 HRS.
Burns Supper Special
On
behalf of your Committee, it gives me great pleasure to invite you
and your guests to our 2004 Burns Night.
Date: Friday 28th January 2005
Location: Eckbo Selskapslokaler, Jegerveien 4, 02386 Oslo
Time: 18:30 hrs for 19:00 hrs
Dress: Highland, Uniform or Black Tie (smoking).
This year, the immortal memory will be presented by Alf Cranner and
we believe that our Patron the rt. Hon. The Earl of Caithness P.C.
Lord Malcolm Sinclair will join us in our celebrations.
The
Haggis which was shot during the season, is maturing nicely in
MacSween’s storage in Edinburgh. Provided there are no last-minute
hiccups in the paper work, we should be able to sit down together to
enjoy this celebration of Burns and of Scotland on the 28th.
The admission cost for Members will be NOK 600 and for Guests NOK
750. Each ticket will be numbered and will represent the equivalent
number in the Grand Draw for five prizes, which will take place
while we are seated, enabling everyone to see the results. An
after-dinner raffle will also be held, in keeping with our regular
meeting tradition. Gifts for the raffle will be most
gratefully received at Eckbo.
It
is again worth mentioning that it is largely due to the generosity
of many Norwegian wine and spirits merchants and of individual
Members of the Society that we will once again be able to honour the
Immortal Memory in the manner to which we are accustomed. As is
normal, there will be an after-dinner bar with our usual selection
of drinks at reasonable prices.
While it is very flattering that there are so many Guests who wish
to attend our Burns Night, the premises restrict the number of
participants and we therefore request that Members limit the number
of their Guests to one each and these will be registered in
chronological order and places will be allocated in good time prior
to the event.
Please make your
reservations to David Wylie at
house@cally.org
Your committee looks forward to the pleasure of your company and to
another most enjoyable gathering.

DECEMBER MEETING
SJØMANNSFORENING
9th DECEMBER 2004, 19:00
HRS.
The
festive season is approaching rapidly and what better way to
celebrate than in the company of the members and guests of the
Caledonian Society. Once again, Hugo Broen has agreed to tell us
all about what we should be drinking with our Christmas dinner in a
speech entitled:
Wines
for the season
Hugo’s tiltle
refers only to wines but if my memory serves me correctly, we
discussed all sorts of other alcoholic (and non-alcoholic
beverages!) last time. So for those of you who need some pointers
for your purchases from the Vinmonopol, there is no excuse for not
coming along to listen to Hugo and bringing a notebook with you.
The
cost for Caledonian Society members is NOK 300 per head and for
Guests NOK 350 per head.
I do hope that we will
see many members and guests at this meeting. Please make your
reservations with David Wylie at
house@cally.org

NOVEMBER MEETING
SJØMANNSFORENING 25TH
NOVEMBER 2004, 19:00 HRS.
Given the importance of oil to the economies of both Norway and the
UK, it is an appropriate subject to talk about at a Caledonian
Society meeting. Rolf Hestnes, a fellow Caledonian, has kindly
agreed to hold a presentation entitled:
 |
"North
Sea oil and gas,
Scotland-Norway competition and collaboration, what is the
future?"
Rolf’s review
will address many issues affecting our two nations’ oil
industries, including the background, cultural differences,
present collaboration and summarising the future challenges
and opportunities |
 |
Rolf’s background is extremely varied having worked for 6 years on
the Apollo and Skylab spaceprograms in the US, 30 years in
shipping/oil and gas internationally with Veritas, J.P.Kenny,
Kværner, the Norwegian Embassy in London and with TBL in Oslo (TBL
is the national industry association representing the offshore
service- and supply industry in Norway). I have to say that I am
looking forward to hearing Rolf speak on this topic as I have a
professional interest in this subject and I know that collaboration
across the median line has not always been an easy subject for the
oil industry or our governments.
The
cost for Caledonian Society members is NOK 300 per head and for
Guests NOK 350 per head.
I do hope that we will
see many members and guests at this meeting. Please make your
reservations with David Wylie at
house@cally.org or by calling him on his mobile 997 91049, by
MONDAY 22nd November please.

OCTOBER MEETING
SJØMANNSFORENING 28TH
OCTOBER 2004, 19:00 HRS.
Our
October meeting marks a watershed in the life of the Caledonian
Society. This invitation to our October meeting is being extended to
the Anglo Norsk Society, the
British/Norwegian Chamber of Commerce, the
Norwegian/Welsh
Society, the Norwegian Irish Society, the
Scottish Country Dance Group and
the Oslo Caledonian Pipe Band.
Tove Haga from
Trugstad Gård has kindly agreed
to entertain us with a presentation entitled
“Food
and Culture, Scotland and Norway”.
Tove probably does not need an
introduction for many of you, but for those who do need additional
details, she is the owner and head chef at
Trugstad Gård outside Oslo (a
restaurant in the Michelin Guide) and she has 10 Norwegian
championships and 4 books to her name. Although I have to admit that
I have not read any of her books, I have to suspect that she is
exceedingly well qualified to talk on this subject.
I do hope that we will see many
members and even more guests at what promises to be a very interesting
and different Society meeting. Please make your reservations with
David Wylie at
house@cally.org by MONDAY 25th October
please.

End of a proud history

Despite
protests, the Royal Scots regiment, the oldest in the British
army, is to be merged with the King's Own Scottish Borderers. The
merger is part of controversial
spending cuts in the British army and will end 371 years of
military service and tradition.
