MARCH MEETING, 30 MARCH 2006

A seconded British Army officer's experienced in a Ghurkha Batallion Mike Seear, tells of his experiences.

"Nineteen years after leaving the 7th Gurkha Rifles as a seconded Light Infantry officer, I attended my first 7th Gurkha Rifles Regimental Association Reunion at Netheravon on Saturday, 13 September 2003. It was an enjoyable event as well as an opportunity to sell a few copies of my book With the Gurkhas in the Falklands – A War Journal published by Pen & Sword Books two months before. An accumulated period of eight years to write, research, re-write, make two fact-finding trips to Argentina in 2002, re-write yet again (twelve drafts in all) and endure an exhausting editorial process was needed before I could claim to be an author. For those who have not read it, the book is deliberately different from the cold objective style that pertains to regimental histories. The former had to be a living story since, in the final analysis, war is about soldiers and their decisions, actions and reactions during the most traumatic ‘life event’ of them all. My eye-witness account therefore had to inform honestly those who wish to learn about ‘the what, how, why, when and who’ of the 1st Battalion’s part in the campaign – as well as those inevitable ‘warts and all’."

FEBRUARY MEETING, 23RD FEBRUARY 2006

SJØMANNSFORENINGEN, 7pm. March

The Cally returns to its normal venue at Sjømannsforeningen for our February meeting after a very enjoyable Burns Supper at Oslo Militære Samfunds Selskapslokaler.  The feedback the Committee has received has been very positive to continuing with OMS for future Burns Suppers and we would welcome any comments you may have to this choice of location as well as to whether we should continue with the Saturday event, or revert to Friday.  We would also like to thank all the Burns Supper speakers, including David Brookes, Ronald C Allison MBE and our patron, Lord Malcolm Sinclair who contributed to the success of the evening. The February meeting will be a photo safari presented by our Vice President John Monn, entitled:

“In Amundsen’s and Shackelton’s Footsteps in the Antartic”.

John will present a series of photographs taken during his trip “down there” in October and November last year.  In addition, we have handed over the kitchen at Sjømannsforeningen to another of our members Espen Welin Larsen, who has promised to deliver some culinary delights with a Scottish taint.  All in all, an exiting evening awaits us.

As usual dinner will cost NOK 300 for members and NOK 350 for guests.

Please make your reservations with David Wylie at house@cally.org, by MONDAY 20thh February 2006.

BURNS NIGHT - OSLO MILITÆRE SAMFUNDS SELSKAPSLOKALER

SATURDAY 28TH JANUARY 2006

On behalf of your Committee, it gives me great pleasure to i nvite you and your guests to our 2006 Burns Night.

Date:               Saturday 28th January 2006
Location:
Oslo Militær Samfund Selskapslokaler, Myntgt 3, 0151 Oslo
Time:
17:30 hrs for 18:00 hrs (note the earlier start time than usual)
Dress:
Highland, Uniform or Black Tie (smoking)

This is the first meeting in an important year in the Caledonian Society’s history – our 6oth Anniversary and what better way to start this year of celebrations, than with our annual Burns Supper.  This year, the immortal memory will be presented by our Patron the Rt. Hon. The Earl of Caithness P.C. Lord Malcolm Sinclair. The dinner will be preceded by a tasting of the whisky commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the split of the union of Norway and Sweden.

The Haggis, which as usual has caused enormous problems to bring to Norway (more about that on the night) is, we believe, maturing nicely in MacSween’s storage before being shipped to Norway.  And with our usual caveat of no last-minute hiccups in the paper work, we should be able to sit down together to enjoy this celebration of Burns and of Scotland on the 28th.

The admission cost for Members will be NOK 650 and for Guests NOK 750.  Each ticket will be numbered and will represent the equivalent number in the Grand Draw for five prizes, which will take place while we are seated, enabling everyone to see the results.  An after-dinner raffle will also be held, in keeping with our regular meeting tradition.  Gifts for the raffle will be most gratefully received at OMSS.

It is again worth mentioning that it is largely due to the generosity of many Norwegian wine and spirits merchants and of individual Members of the Society that we will once again be able to honour the Immortal Memory in the manner to which we are accustomed.  As is normal, there will be an after-dinner bar with our usual selection of drinks at reasonable prices.

Please note that we intend to apply the dress code strictly so please inform your Guests accordingly.

In the past we have experienced that seating arrangements have been altered after places have been reserved at the tables.  This is not an acceptable practice and we therefore recommend that you arrive early enough to reserve the places you wish without having to move others around.

Please make your reservations to David Wylie at house@cally.org, by FRIDAY 20th January 2006 AT THE LATEST.

The October meeting will be a Strategy meeting to be held on 27th October at our usual location, Oslo Sjømannsforening, starting at 7pm.

During this meeting, the Committee would like the members to voice their opinions on the future of the Society, within the framework of the current Constitution.  Topics to be addressed should include (but not necessarily be limited to):

  • 60th anniversary - organising committee - members, reporting frequency, format of event, available funds

  • Format of regular meetings - frequency, style, location

  • Raison d'être for the society -  how do we communicate this

  • New members - where do we find, how do we keep, how do we raise the profile of the Society

  • Income - attendance fees, joining fees, sales of items

Andreas Wettre from “The Performance Group” has agreed to assist us in this process and to ensure that everyone’s opinions are made known.  Note that this meeting is for members only and as usual dinner will cost NOK 300/member.
