MARCH MEETING, THURSDAY 29TH MARCH 2007

OSLO MILITÆRE SAMFUND, 7pm.

After the success of our February meeting at the OMS (see however Norman’s Message below), we have chosen to return there for our March meeting. We are fortunate in being able to invite you to listen to Einar Lunde, who will give a presentation entitled:

THE MIRACLE IN SOUTH AFRICA – FROM OPPRESSION, VIOLENCE AND TERROR TO PEACE AND RECONCILIATION

As many of you know, Einar is one of NRK’s anchor men in the newsroom.  He has also worked as a foreign correspondent with a base in Nairobi in Kenya during the 1970’s and 80’s. Einar was the Norwegian journalist who spent most time in South Africa during the apartheid regime, despite being a persona non grata and being on the government’s hit list.

Einar Lunde has written two books on his experiences behind a TV camera in South Africa, and the Society’s members and guests will have an unique opportunity to obtain copies of these with a personal message from the author.  A good book to read during the Easter holidays?

FEBRUARY MEETING, THURSDAY 22nd FEBRUARY 2007
Oslo Militær Samfund Selskapslokaler, Myntgt 3, 0151 Oslo, 7PM

"The Campaign against the Dounreay nuclear reactor - a unuque experience between Norway and Scotland - between ordinary citizens and political leaders"

Mr Odd Einar Dørum has a long political history having first been a Member of Parliament for Sør-Trondelag in the period from 1977 - 1981. He has held various positions in Government including the position as the Minister for Transport and Communication, and as Minister for Justice, in two periods from 1999.

Although we have chosen to move premises from this meeting, we are unfortunately unable to avoid having to increase our prices somewhat. Dinner will therefore cost NOK 400 for members and NOK 450 for guests. Included in this price are two subsidised drinks as we are unable to maintain our own bar. Each member and guest will be entitled to purchase two drinks at the low price of NOK 50 each. If you wish you purchase additional drinks these will be at OMS' standard prices

Please make your reservations with David Wylie at house@cally.org by MONDAY 19th FEBRUARY 2007.

December - Christmas Meeting, Thursday 14th December
Sjømannsforening, 7PM

Hugo Broen once again entertained us with his bi-annual sojourn into wine recommendations for the Christmas Season - He has allowed us to use his recommendations here.

November Meeting Thursday 30 November 2006
SJOMANNSFORENING, 7PM

- and what is more appropriate to celebrate St Andrews Day than a Whisky Tasting! Chris Maile once again tickled our taste buds with a selection of 5 whiskies under the heading of

Choice Whiskies from the Oslo Whisky Festival

so for those of you who were unable to attend the festival, here is your chance to taste some of the whiskies that were on display. The meeting will be held at our usual location at Sjømannsforeningen, starting at 7pm.

OCTOBER MEETING, THURSDAY 26th OCTOBER 2006
SJOMANNSFORENING, 7PM

After a very successful 60th Anniversary Ball, it is time to revert to our more "normal" meetings, the first of which will be held at our usual meeting place at Sjomannsforening. We are fortunate in being able to inform you that our member Terje Hansen will give a presentation on:

Golf In Scotland

a topic which I am sure will be of great interest to many members and guests. With the golf season nearing an end in the Oslo district, perhaps the idea of a trip to Scotland could appeal.

As usual, dinner will cost NOK 300 for members and NOK 350 for guests. Please Make your reservations with.David Wylie at house@cally.org 0r by calling him on 99791049, by Monday 23rd October at the latest.

60th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

On behalf of the Committee it gives me great pleasure to invite you and your partner to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Caledonian Society of Norway.  The celebrations will be held at the Hotel Continental on Saturday 9th September 2006, starting at 7 pm.  We have chosen the Hotel Continental as this was the first meeting place of the founders of the Society, way back in 1946.

The Committee has worked hard to make this a memorable evening to celebrate the long history of the Society and its ties between Scotland and Norway and we have invited a number of distinguished guests to join us.

The cost per person is Kr 750 which will include a three course dinner and wine with your meal.

The dress code is Black tie (smoking), Highland Dress or Bunad.

Please make your reservations with myself (in writing only please) to secretary@cally.org, no later than FRIDAY 18 AUGUST. As the numbers are limited I would suggest that you book early.  The Committee will also welcome any additional guests you may wish to invite to join us in our celebrations.

I look forward to seeing many of you on the 9th.

Yours aye
