Speaker:
Mr Kurt Johannessen Subject/theme:
“From the Highlands to occupied Norway –
Norwegian Saboteurs and their equipment 1940-1945” Time/date:
1830 hrs, Thursday 22 February 2001 Venue:
Sjømannsforeningen,
Kronprinsensgt. 1, 0251 Oslo This evening’s presentation promises to be one to evoke the passion of
our elder members, the enthusiasm of the younger ones and indeed the interest
and respect of all. In the face of recent happenings in Scandinavia and not
least Norway, it is perhaps a fitting occasion to remind us that the Nazi
movement is no new creation. During the Second World War, many gave their lives
to ensure that we may now live freely without such oppression. We will learn how
the Norwegian Saboteurs were able to slow the invasion forces, and with help
from over the water, how they played no small role in the capitulation of the
oppressing force, and the subsequent reclaiming of freedom for Norway. Kurt Johannessen is a retired businessman, and as a keen marksman and
pistol shooter he not only collects arms and military artefacts associated with
the Second World War, but has also represented Norway in the Rome Olympics in
1960.
