Dear Caledonian,

Once again it is my pleasure, on behalf of your Committee, to invite you and your guests to the second meeting of our Autumn season. It was encouraging to see so many participants at the excellent whisky tasting last month and I encourage you all to attend this coming meeting which promises to be equally interesting, while appealing to another combination of senses! Details are as follows:

Speaker: Mr. Bård Kolltveit, Director of Research, Norwegian Maritime Museum

Theme: "From Western Norway to the Western Isles of Scotland"

Time/date: 18.30 hrs, Thursday 25 October 2001

Venue: Sjømannsforeningen, Kronprinsensgt. 1, 0251 Oslo

This evening we are to be taken "Over the sea to Skye" in an entirely different manner than the origins of the song suggest. As the title of this evening¹s talk indicates, our speaker¹s subject will be the sea-going communication networks which connect the various islands and regions of Western Norway and their counterparts on the West coast of Scotland, MacBraynes being a familiar representative of the latter.

As a native of Western Norway with a keen interest in the sea, it was a natural choice for the young Bård Kolltveit to study its history and, having achieved an MA Degree in Maritime History, to join the Norwegian Maritime Museum as Curator. Since then his career and personal interest have followed a steady course by way of his appointment as Director of the Museum in 1985 to his present position as Director of Research. Authorship of twelve books on maritime themes and his background as guest lecturer on cruise ships ensures a wealth of information on which our Speaker can draw for our enjoyment.

As usual, members will be able to enjoy our offer of a good supper, wines and coffee at the subsidised price of Kr. 200,- per head, and of course guests will be most welcome at the full price of Kr. 270,-. Additionally, we shall be serving our own selection of whiskies and Drambuie at club prices, and all other drinks will be available from the caterer¹s bar.

Please make your reservations for this evening by calling the Chairman of the House Committee at the number below, no later than 14.00 hrs on Tuesday 23rd October 2001. Please also give the names of your guests. May I also draw your attention to important news and information below.

Yours Aye,
