Dear Caledonian,On behalf of your Committee, it is my pleasure once again to invite you and your guests to our next meeting, the last before Christmas. So far this season we have been entertained and enlightened by a variety of interesting Speakers, and the topic for this, the final meeting of the year, promises to be no less so. Please come along and enjoy a subject of interest to Scots and Norwegians alike, though for dramatically different reasons! Details are as follows: Speaker: Mr. Knut Paasche, Director of the Viking ship Museum on Bygdøy Theme: Vikinger i Skottland? Time/date: 18.30 hrs, Thursday 6th December 2001 Venue: Sjømannsforeningen, Kronprinsensgt. 1, 0251 Oslo The Vikings are coming! The Vikings are coming! That warning cry must have struck fear, if not terror, into the hearts of the inhabitants of various parts of Britain, not least Scotland. But is this reputation of infamy completely justified?. Surely not, and to point out just how wrong the popular concept of the Viking era is, our Speaker this evening is more than qualified to dismiss the myth. At present Mr. Paasche is engaged in research studies for a Doctorate, his subject being the reconstruction of the "TUNE SHIP", a Viking ship discovered at Råde on Rolsøy, north of Fredrikstad. His qualifications include a Master of Arts Degree in Nordic Archeology and he has previously held the post of Regional Archeologist in Buskerud. We could not ask for a better source of information on an historical era and its exciting, if somewhat overwhelming, people. As usual, at this time of year, members will be able to enjoy our offer of "JULE MAT", wines and coffee at the subsidised price of Kr. 200,- per head, and of course guests will be most welcome at the full price of Kr. 270,-. Additionally, we shall be serving our own selection of whiskies and Drambuie at club prices, and all other drinks will be available from the caterer's bar. Please make your reservations for this evening by calling the Chairman of the House Committee at the number below, no later than 14.00 on Tuesday 4th December 2001. It would also be much appreciated if you would give the names of your guests. |
