The next regular meeting, on 21th
March is entitled "A Short History of Clan Sinclair and its
connections with Norway". The speaker will be Iain Laird,
Trustee of the clan.
Clan Sinclair, one of Scotland's premier Norman
Clans, has its roots in Norway in the 9th Century and has maintained its
links to the present day. Iain's talk summarises the Clan's
remarkable history and explores its links with Norway from Ragnvald Møre
Jarl to the Battle of Kringen and beyond
|
The families of Caithness, the Northernmost county of
Scotland are mostly of Norse descent. They maintained links with their area of
origin, Møre, Romsdal and Sogn, up to the 17th century and many spoke
Norwegian. Mr Laird's family also comes from Caithness, as do the Sinclairs, and
Iain is a trustee of the Clan Sinclaire Trust. Herein lies the link which brings
us to the evening's subject. We will hear that in 1612 a company of Sinclairs,
under the command of Colonel George Sinclair and on its way to Sweden to enlist
in Swedish service in the Kalmar war, was ambushed by Norwegian Patriots in
Gudbrandsdalen at Kringen.
Today Mr. Laird works as a senior manager for the London
subsidiary of a Norwegian insurance provider and speaks a little Norwegian.
