Letter from the Scottish Parliament

Dear Caledonian,

It gives me special pleasure on behalf of your Committee to invite you to a novel experience at "our own" normal meeting place, namely a Ball in co-operation with the Oslo Scottish Country Dance Group. While our two organisations have previously had the pleasure of each other’s company at the British Embassy on similar occasions, it is the first time we have pooled our resources in such an activity and it is to be hoped that the occasion will not be unique.

The O.S.C.D.G. have promised to entertain us with some exhibition dancing as well as leading us in some of the more popular Scottish dance favourites and we very much look forward to their participation. I should like to remind you of their kind invitation to our members: "..... a chance to run through some ceilidh dances on the Monday night before the ball (25 November) at our normal dance evening. Please let us know if anyone is interested". Contact: Phillipa Voll, tel. 6714 07 49, or Phillipa.Voll@dnv.com

Details of the evening are as follows:
Event: St. Andrew’s Ball with the Oslo Scottish Country Dance Group
Date: Thursday 28th November 2002
Venue: Oslo Sjømannsforeningen, Kronprinsensgt. 1, 0251 Oslo
Dress: Black Tie (Smoking), Highland, Bunad or Dress Uniform

19.00: Arrival and welcome drink
19.30: Piped in to Dinner
21.45: Dancing
01.30: Auld Lang Syne

As most of our members know, Sjømannsforeningen is not an exceptionally large locality and since there are two organisations involved in the evening’s activity, it has been found necessary to limit the number of participants from both sides.

Consequently we, the Caledonian Society, have 60 places, i.e. 29 members and their partners, plus one guest and partner from the British Embassy.

The O.S.C.D.G. have 40 places, or 20 members and partners. This means that you should make your booking as quickly as possible. Should you however be met with the fact that the evening is already fully booked, your request will be recorded on a Waiting List which will be established on a strictly chronological basis. Those on the List who may take over cancelled bookings will be informed as quickly as possible before the event.

The cost of the evening will be Kr. 500,- /head which will include two glasses of wine or two small bottles of beer at table. Also included in this price are raffle tickets which will give the ladies the chance to win two exciting prizes and the gentlemen two welcome bottles of whisky. The following is the menu for the evening:

Scotch Broth accompanied by a glass of Sherry

Stuffed Highland Turkey with potatoes, Brussels Sprouts with bacon,Grilled Tomatoes with Aberdeen Spices and Johnnie Walker Turkey Sauce

Icecream Cake with a hint of Scotland

served with either two glasses of wine of two small bottles of beer. Coffee will be served in the lounge while the floor is being cleared for dancing.
