The Social Calendar

No year is exactly alike any other, some outstandingly fine traditions may be repeated each year, but there is always something that makes each event unique and quite unforgettable. As tradition would have it, Caledonian meetings usually occur on the last Thursday of each month during the open season. Members are encouraged to invite guests to all Regular Meetings. A typical Caledonian year may contain the following:

*

Last Thursday in September       (Regular Meeting)
* Last Thursday in October  (Regular Meeting)
* Last Thursday in November and/or First Thursday in December (St Andrew Celebration with Ladies and/or Regular Meeting)
* Closest Friday to Burn’s Night in January    (Burn’s Night Supper)
* Last Thursday in February (Regular Meeting)
* Last Thursday in March (Regular Meeting)
* Last Thursday in April (AGM – members only)
* Usually in June (Summer Meeting - Members and their Ladies only)

A Typical Meeting

  • Notification of all meetings will be sent in writing to all members and candidates for membership approximately 2 weeks prior to each event.

  • Our regular meetings usually occur at the Oslo Sjømannsforeningen (Kronprinsensgate 1, 0251 Oslo – situated just behind Norwegian Foreign Office (“UD”) and over the road from the Vika Police Station).

  • Our meetings are only open to members and their guests, and all attendance must be reported to the House Committee, as instructed on the appropriate Meeting Circular, in order to enable the necessary catering to take place.

  • We have no uniform of strict order of dress, but members and their guests are expected to wear a jacket and tie. Members are entitled and indeed encouraged to buy and wear the Society tie. Highland dress is also encouraged.

  • Entrance money is collected from members and their guests at the door on arrival.

  • The doors open for these regular meetings at 1830 hrs, and after a pre-dinner drink at the bar we are called in to eat dinner at approx. 1915 hrs.

  • The menu varies from meeting to meeting, but generally speaking there is a hot main course (which is served once) and is accompanied by house wine, followed by a dessert and coffee.

  • The coffee is served at the table and can be accompanied by Drambuie or Cognac (individuals can buy tickets for this according to own preference from the bar before going in to dine).

  • A raffle is usually held whilst seated at the table.

  • A Presentation or Lecture by the evening’s Guest of Honour follows the dinner. The after dinner presentation usually follows some theme of topical interest, or has some special significance often with relation to Scotland and her culture.

  • Presentations with questions and answers usually last about 30 minutes.

  • We then adjourn to the bar, where we can buy Whisky and Drambuie at special Society rates.

  • The evening typically draws to a close at about midnight.
