General Information
The
purpose of this guide is to act as a supplement to the Society’s Constitution,
by giving general details of The Caledonian Society of Norway. In this manner,
it is aimed to present an understanding of “Who we are”, “What we do” and
“How you can join us”. This document is
directed at all current members, and all potential new members with a view to
encouraging them to apply for membership.
Our
Roots....
Founded
in 1946, The Caledonian Society of Norway is an official Member of the St
Andrew Society, incorporating the World Federation of Scottish Societies &
Individuals. We are proud of our history and traditions, and are also keen to
look to the future always prepared to adapt and progress where and when
necessary, in order to provide a better service to our present members and our
successors. Our Patron is The Rt. Hon. The
Earl of Caithness PC.
Our
constitution states the reason for our existence, which is: “ ...to promote the
cultural relationship between Norway and Scotland to be achieved by appropriate
lecturers, gatherings, etc.”.
Membership
By
tradition, we are an all male Society, and at the time of writing we have 117
members with an age range from 25 to 88 years old. As we are Oslo based it is
not surprising that the majority of our members are of Norwegian origin, but
one thing we all have in common is our special interest in Scotland and her
Culture. Our members come from many differing walks of life. Variety is indeed
the spice of the Society life: some members are professionals and academics,
some self-employed craftsmen, some have military connections and others are
retired.
To be
eligible to apply for membership, candidates must be at least 18 years of age,
and normally have attended at least two regular meetings. A Membership
Application form can then be obtained from the Society’s Honorary Secretary
(see name and address at end of this document). All candidates need to be Proposed
and Seconded by existing Caledonian Members, and the appropriately signed
Membership Application form should then be returned to the Society’s Honorary
Secretary. It will then be subject to final approval by the Committee. All
candidates will be informed in writing of the outcome of their application.
How much will it cost me to
become a member
To
enable The Society to honour its aim of providing an interesting and worthwhile
programme of events to its members, it is necessary to require some form of
payment from the members. Having said this, The Society is a non-profit making
organization, and although some donations are made each year to worthy causes,
the vast majority of the yearly income is used to subsidize the programme of
social events.
Joining Fee
A one time Joining Fee will be
sought soon after the Committee has approved the application for your
membership. The current rate is NOK 800 which includes the first years
membership and joining fee.
Annual Subscriptions
Annual
Membership Subscriptions are usually demanded on 1st March each year
and are valid for the current Caledonian financial year which runs from 1st
January to the last day of December. New members approved after 30th June
will not be charged for the remainder of the current year's membership. The following rates currently apply:

Regular Meeting Attendance Dues
As mentioned earlier, it is the policy of The
Society to subsidize those members who actively partake in the social programme. In this way, the cost of an excellent night out with a two-course
meal with wine and coffee, excellent company and interesting presentations is
almost too good to be true. The following rates currently apply:
